First planning for a hydrogen network in Siegen
Siegener Versorgungsbetriebe GmbH (SVB), a drinking water and natural gas distribution network operator in the border triangle of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, is planning to build a 12-kilometer-long hydrogen pipeline between the Siegen districts of Eiserfeld and Geisweid in 2030 to supply the industrial site of Siegen with hydrogen. At the same time, SVB has already started planning the heat supply for the city of Siegen, which has around 100,000 inhabitants. The conversion of the heat supply for citizens depends to a large extent on which heat sources will be available. One such reliable heat source can be waste heat from hydrogen production and from industrial hydrogen use. By coupling the hydrogen pipeline and the substations using an electrolyzer, the hydrogen can be generated locally depending on the future capacity in the power grid. Since Siegen is the intersection of several long-distance gas pipelines, the company is also aiming to connect to the nationwide hydrogen core network in the medium to long term by converting an existing long-distance gas pipeline to transport hydrogen.
