On this page you will find information about hydrogen in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Hydrogen is a gas. It is abbreviated as H2. You can't see it or smell it, but it contains energy. Hydrogen can therefore be used to fuel trucks, generate electricity or produce steel, for example.
Today we don’t use that much hydrogen. We primarily consume crude oil, coal and natural gas. These are also called fossil energies. Burning fossil fuels is bad for the climate because it produces greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse gases are causing our climate to change more quickly and our planet to become warmer. Climate change is also causing severe storms, such as storms or prolonged drought, to occur more frequently. As the Earth gets warmer, icebergs melt and sea levels rise. Sometimes people have to leave their homes because of climate change because they can no longer grow crops due to drought.
But hydrogen is good for climate protection. Hydrogen can be produced using green electricity from wind turbines or solar systems. No greenhouse gases are produced.
That's why we want more hydrogen instead of fossil fuels. This is how we can protect the climate and have a better future for ourselves and our children.
