Trailblazer

Construction of a 20 MW electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen

Hydrogen production

Air Liquide is planning the "Trailblazer", a 30 MW electrolyser for the production of renewable hydrogen, at the Oberhausen site. The Trailblazer will be connected to Air Liquide's existing hydrogen pipeline to supply key industries and zero-emission mobility on the Rhine and Ruhr with renewable hydrogen. The Trailblazer is a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser that produces renewable hydrogen and oxygen from water and renewable electricity. The technological solution for the project is being developed as part of the partnership between Air Liquide and Siemens Energy announced in February 2021. By 2023, both partners will build a 20 MW electrolysis plant that will produce 2,900 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year as well as renewable oxygen. In a second phase, Air Liquide plans to increase the plant's capacity to 30 MW.
