Innovation Project

SWDhydrogenium

Hydrogen from Düsseldorf for Düsseldorf

Hydrogen production

Stadtwerke Düsseldorf and Rheinbahn are investing in hydrogen technology to decarbonise the transport sector. In the SWDhydrogenium project, the companies are cooperating with the experienced hydrogen filling station operator H2 MOBILITY Deutschland. Stadtwerke Düsseldorf is investing in an electrolyser with a capacity of one megawatt (MW) to be able to produce green hydrogen on site in the future. Rheinbahn is procuring 20 fuel cell buses as part of the conversion of its fleet to climate-friendly drives. The first ten will be delivered in 2023. These buses will be refuelled at a filling station operated by the partner company H2 MOBILITY on the Stadtwerke premises on Höherweg in Düsseldorf-Flingern.

The project is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme with a total of around 1.2 million euros. The funding directive is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ). The total costs for the realisation of the project are three million euros.
