Integration of fibre-based sensors during the production of hydrogen tanks for intelligent condition monitoring, lifetime prediction and assessment

Infrastructure project

In order to contribute to this goal, this research project aims to reduce the maintenance costs of hydrogen tanks by at least 50 % and to safely utilise the entire lifetime of these safety-relevant components of at least 20 - 30 years. The project also aims to provide the necessary structural information to ensure optimal refuelling performance within the safety limits specified in the refuelling protocols. The approach to achieve this goal is the lifetime prediction and assessment of hydrogen tanks. For this purpose, an intelligent structural health monitoring system will be developed, based on the use of fibre-optic and resistance-based sensors, which will be integrated into the hydrogen tanks during production. Two manufacturing systems of hydrogen tanks will be considered to investigate the transferability of the technologies to different deployments such as stationary and mobile applications of the storage systems. Intelligent condition monitoring will ensure the safe integration of the storage systems into energy supply networks.
