Innovation Project

NIP II - ELECTRICITY

Mobility

For the first time, an all-electric and hybrid propulsion concept consisting of fuel cells and accumulators is being designed on an inland waterway vessel and the dynamic interaction of the energy sources is being researched and optimised with regard to the maximum range of the canal barge. The fuel cell technology is used for the hydrogen-based base load energy supply of the drive train. Peak loads are provided by accumulators. This is a unique selling point for Germany as a technology location. The project demonstrates the feasibility of hydrogen as an energy storage system with its specific features and requirements in shipping.
