Innovation Project

Joint project: BIC H2

Hydrogen for large-scale applications; sub-project: FZJ

Mobility

Since 2011, the Regionalverkehr Köln GmbH (RVK) has been using hydrogen-powered fuel cell hybrid buses in regular service. As part of the company's "Zero Emission" project, in the course of which RVK is striving for a completely emission-free local transport system, the aim is to realise an increasingly sustainable and emission-free local public transport system (ÖPNV).

With this funding project and the associated purchase of 30 fuel cell hybrid buses as well as the installation of two H2 filling stations, this innovative and environmentally friendly technology is to be used in a large part of the company's transport area. The aim is to significantly reduce harmful emissions such as CO2, NOx, particulate matter and noise. The aim is to demonstrate that the technology has already reached a stage of development that allows the reliable use of large fleets. The H2 filling stations required for this are being set up and evaluated at the RVK depots in Meckenheim and Wermelskirchen together with a consortium consisting of Linde, New NP, ETC and the Jülich Research Centre.
