Innovation Project

HyHeatStore

Infrastructure project

The aim is to develop and demonstrate a novel, magnesium hydride-based heat storage system for high-temperature applications that has a significantly higher storage density than conventional storage systems.

The thermal discharge of the heat storage system is based on the reversible, exothermic reaction of magnesium with hydrogen to form magnesium hydride. In this reaction, heat is released at approx. 400 °C. During the reverse reaction, the decomposition of magnesium hydride into magnesium and hydrogen, heat is required, which charges the heat accumulator.
