Innovation Project

H2Steel

Industrial application

The H2Stahl real laboratory aims at a far-reaching conversion of the steel industry to hydrogen technologies. This can reduce CO2 emissions in Duisburg, Europe's largest steel location, and thus make a significant contribution to climate protection. As a bridging technology, the injection of hydrogen into a blast furnace during ongoing operation is being industrially tested. Carbon is partially replaced as a reducing agent, so that a CO2 reduction of about 20 % is expected at the blast furnace. For a long-term transformation, the direct reduction of iron ore with hydrogen or hydrogen-rich gases is also being tested as a key technology. The parallel processing of both technologies and an accompanying process regarding the regulatory and socio-ecological framework conditions will enable the structural change to a modern industrial location.
