Transport of hydrogen in rocks, taking into account abiotic and microbial redox reactions (H2_ReacT2)
As part of the GEO:N specialist program “Use of Underground Geosystems,” H2_ReacT and the follow-up project H2_React2 were funded as collaborative projects between RWTH Aachen University, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The overarching objective was to gain the most comprehensive understanding possible of all potentially relevant transport and conversion processes in geological reservoirs used for hydrogen storage.
Both projects pursue this objective by collecting reliable experimental data and parameters on the reactivity and mobility of molecular hydrogen in connection with the use of underground space. Abiotic chemical reactions and microbial conversions as well as transport mechanisms of molecular hydrogen under elevated (“in situ”) pressure and temperature conditions are considered.
