Sustainable flat glass production Saint-Gobain Cologne-Porz
The Saint-Gobain plant in Cologne-Porz manufactures glass for the construction industry – a process that is traditionally very energy-intensive and high in emissions. As one of the winners of the first round of German climate protection agreements, the company will now receive financial support for up to 15 years to break new technological ground and massively accelerate the reduction of CO₂ emissions.
As part of the transformation, the production process will be fundamentally changed: Fossil fuels such as natural gas and carbonate-containing raw materials will be replaced by biogas and hydrogen. A central element of this change is the introduction of innovative gas-electric hybrid technology. This includes an electrical heating capacity of eight megawatts and an H₂-ready gas combustion system that can use a mixture of biogas and hydrogen.
