Integration of fiber-based sensors during the production of hydrogen tanks for intelligent condition monitoring, life expectancy and assessment
Infrastructure project
To contribute to this goal, this research project aims to reduce the maintenance costs of hydrogen tanks by at least 50% and to safely utilize the entire service life of these safety-relevant components of at least 20 - 30 years. The project also aims to provide the necessary structural information to guarantee optimal refueling performance within the safety limits according to the refueling protocols. The approach to achieve this goal is the service life prediction and assessment of hydrogen tanks. For this purpose, an intelligent structural condition monitoring system will be developed that is based on the use of fiber optic and resistance-based sensors, which will be integrated into the hydrogen tanks during production. Two manufacturing systems of hydrogen tanks will be considered in order to demonstrate the transferability of the technologies to different applications such as stationary and mobile applications of the storage systems. Intelligent condition monitoring is intended to guarantee the safe integration of storage systems into energy supply networks.
