smartVessel – Fibre-based sensors in hydrogen tanks

The smartVessel research project is developing an intelligent condition monitoring system for fibre-reinforced plastic hydrogen tanks in order to reduce maintenance costs by at least 50% and safely exploit their service life of 20 to 30 years. Fibre optic sensors are integrated into the tanks during production and continuously record strains and temperature changes. The data enables precise service life prediction and condition-based maintenance, minimising safety risks and reducing operating costs. The project supports the safe, economical use of hydrogen storage and contributes to the promotion of hydrogen technology in the mobility and energy sectors.
