Operation of glass melting tanks with hydrogen-rich coke oven gas
Since March 2025, glass manufacturer Verallia in Essen has been using hydrogen-rich energy gas (coke oven gas) from ArcelorMittal Bremen's coking plant in Bottrop for its production processes. The energy gas, which has a hydrogen content of around 60% and is produced during coke production in Bottrop, replaces natural gas in the production processes, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. The use of this gas shows that it will be possible in the future to operate glass melting furnaces entirely with green hydrogen.
