Innovation Project

Joint project: H2-HotRoll

Prevention of CO2-Emissions in the Steel Industry by Using H2 in Continuously Operated Thermoprocessing Lines Using the Example of Reheating Furnaces

Industrial Application

The aim of the project is to reduce or gradually reduce energy-related CO2 emissions in continuously operating thermal processing plants by replacing carbon-based energy sources with hydrogen. The subsequent process and product quality under the conditions of the modified hot process is ensured by adapting the process control, descaling and using oxidation-conditioning coatings. In addition, adaptations of the fittings, the M&R technology and the process control have to be planned and implemented. On the basis of the results, potentials and obstacles to switching to hydrogen as an energy source are compiled in order to achieve greater acceptance of the technology.
