Hydrogen storage RWE Epe-H2

The Gronau-Epe site is also ideal as a hydrogen storage location due to its proximity to the planned hydrogen pipeline between Lingen and the Ruhr area, combined with optimal geological conditions for gas storage. RWE Gas Storage West is therefore planning to expand the existing above-ground facilities to include facilities for storing and withdrawing hydrogen in caverns. The facility will be constructed in such a way that, in the first construction phase, two caverns will be used to store approximately 70 million m³ of hydrogen, with a volume of 38 million m³ of hydrogen available for customer use. An optional second construction phase of the hydrogen sub-facility will later enable an increase in storage and retrieval capacity. The first hydrogen is to be fed into the plant in 2026, with commercial operation scheduled to start in 2027.
