Together with Business Metropole Ruhr (BMR), the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Infrastructures and Geotechnologies IEG is investigating hydrogen storage requirements in the commercial and industrial areas of the 53 municipalities in the Ruhr region, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). 
The aim is to develop local storage solutions as an alternative to grid-based supply in order to secure the availability of green hydrogen for SMEs. Instead of individual businesses, consumption clusters such as commercial areas are being considered in order to bundle demand, reduce investment risks, and create new business models for regional energy suppliers.
