Electrolysers

H2annibal

Evonik and Siemens Energy are using modified electrolysis technology to produce green hydrogen at the site of the former Hannibal coal mine in Herne. Evonik uses this hydrogen as a starting material for the production of isophorone diamine, an important raw material for the manufacture of wind turbine rotor blades.

Until now, the chemical company has sourced hydrogen from fossil fuels. The electrolysis pilot project is now testing a sustainable alternative for the first time. A PEM electrolyser from Siemens Energy with a capacity of 8 megawatts is being used. If the project is successful, there is the possibility of installing another electrolyser in the same hall. This would enable the site to cover its entire green hydrogen requirements.
