Climate Port Gelsenkirchen

The aim of the "Klimahafen Gelsenkirchen" initiative is to achieve climate neutrality as quickly as possible. Behind it are companies from the city port of Gelsenkirchen and the surrounding area, reinforced by other institutions from the city. Together they want to actively use the unique central location of the city harbour, where transport routes and gas pipelines cross, for the transformation of the economy towards climate neutrality.

Gelsenkirchen's city harbour has unique prerequisites to become a real laboratory for the transformation of small and medium-sized businesses: It is home to energy-intensive businesses from various sectors, has a large volume of traffic as a trimodal transhipment point for goods, is connected to numerous gas pipelines thanks to its central location in the Metropole Ruhr and will probably be able to be supplied with green hydrogen from the GetH2 nuclear pipeline as early as 2024. Options for a local electrolysis capacity are also being developed.
