Electrolysers
Carbon2Chem: Electrolyser
The Carbon2Chem initiative is researching how metallurgical gases from steel production can be used in the chemical industry (see project “Carbon2Chem: Overall project”). Although coke oven gas already contains large amounts of hydrogen, additional hydrogen produced by electrolysis is needed to manufacture valuable chemical products. For this purpose, an alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) system from thyssenkrupp nucera with a capacity of 2 MW has been installed in the pilot plant. It is powered by green electricity and can be operated at full load, but also with rapidly changing load profiles.
The electrolyzer is capable of operating both at a constant full load and with flexibly changing load profiles. This allows it to adapt to the fluctuating availability of renewable energies such as wind and solar power while providing high-quality primary control power for the electricity market.
