Industrial Application
The overall aim of the FlexHybHeat project is to develop a flexible heating concept for steel billet reheating. The heating concept should be able to achieve warm- and direct-use rates of 10% and 70% despite the individual order of the rolling mills. The falling primary energy requirement due to the increased direct use is accompanied by a reduction in CO2, which is to be further achieved through the use of renewable energy in the form of, for example, electricity or hydrogen. Increasing direct use while maintaining the same flexibility is only possible with a novel, multi-stage heating concept. To predict the billet temperature, thermal models of the sub-systems are combined to form a process chain model and integrated into a process control system, which takes over the control of the entire system. A Life Cycle Assessment that is also to be developed will be integrated into the process chain model and the process control system. The developed solution should not only be suitable for new furnace systems, but also for retrofit installations, thus enabling a shorter market diffusion.
